The Elkton Elks defeated visiting North Caroline's Bulldogs in the East Regional final game Friday night, November 18. "We were in this football game to win it," said Elkton head coach Matt Feeney. The team had lost last year to North Caroline and their victory this year tasted sweet. "We wrote last years score on a white board to be a reminder of what happened, a lot of the guys that played last year did not want to have the same result," said Feeney. The Elks were the first to score with a touchdown and point after kick. North Caroline's Bulldogs were unable to move the ball in the first quarter. The Elks continued to score with two more touchdowns, which brought the score to 19-0 at the end of the first quarter. Rising Sun volleyball coach Rich Wilson did not shy away from assigning blame for his team's loss in the opening game of the state semifinals Thursday night at Ritchie Coliseum.
"So, a statement. How about I blew the first game? Entirely," Wilson said to start the post match press conference. "We've been working on matching up with their middle hitter so we flopped the rotation around a little bit. Want to know the difference between the first game and the last three? That was it." After switching back to their regular rotation, the Tigers won the next three games to defeat Liberty 18-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-17 to advance to the Monday, November 23, state title match. Led by Top 5 finishes from Elle Meyer and Grant Franceschina, Bohemia Manor placed fourth in the girls team competition and was fifth among Class 1A boys at Saturday's state meet at Hereford High.
The Rising Sun volleyball team showed it's not suffering from triskaidekaphobia – fear of the number 13.
On Friday the 13th, the Tigers won the 13th region title in school history by sweeping Kent Island 25-6, 25-6, 25-14. The Perryville volleyball team captured its fifth straight region title with a sweep of visiting Pocomoke Friday.
The Panthers prevailed 25-13, 25-13, 25-20. The Rising Sun volleyball team opened the playoffs with a 25-10, 25-11, 25-9 sweep over visiting Harford Tech Monday night, November 9.
Both teams had a lot at stake in the football regular season finale between Perryville and host Rising Sun Friday night.
It was the Tigers who accomplished their goals with a convincing 38-8 triumph. Perryville's girls soccer team posted a satisfying win over Havre de Grace in its playoff opener before being ousted by visiting Patterson Mill Friday evening in the region semifinals.
Bohemia Manor captured both the boys and girls region titles Thursday at Fair Hill and will lead the Cecil County contingent into the state meet.
Janet Candy did her best to be diplomatic but the classy Perryville field hockey coach couldn't completely hide her resentment.
Patterson Mill scored 3:13 into the first 7-on-7 overtime period to nip the Panthers 1-0 in the region title game Wednesday afternoon in Perryville. |
